"My wife created my website and used PhotoShelter to do so.
As
far as tips go, you need to build up a good body of work. Then you can
contact editors and ask if they will take a look at your images and
include you in a list of photographers that they send their want lists
to."

“Thank you very much for your kind words.
I use Adobe Lightroom for my workflow from import, to editing to uploading images online and sending out to editors/art directors. If you have specific questions about work flow, we can talk over the phone. I do have a process, but better to talk about it rather than type it.
I did create my website, but it is dated and needs to be freshened. I just used one of the templates from SmugMug.
I would keep a keen eye on the health and well being of the print world. It’s dying. I hate to be that guy, but print magazines are dying on the vine. It’s scary.
If I were you, I would develop an online presence any way possible…through Insta, blog, podcast or similar portal.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. Happy to hop on the phone too if you have specific questions re Workflow.”

“Thank you. I just grabbed a camera And started shooting. I have only been doing this for about three years and still don’t really know what I’m doing. But I would say just shoot a lot and watch for your own I am style. I don’t really have a workflow. I shoot what I see and I am always looking for different angles. Are use light room to edit, and I use the free website builder WIX”

Hi there John, Thank you for the kind words, Dorothea Lange was one of my main inspirations for that project so your statement means a lot! I use Adobe Lightroom as my post processing editor, and keep it very simple. I import RAWS to an external harddrive via Lightroom, then edit the ones I want and export an edited folder back to the external harddrive. (I like Rugged LaCie brand) I built my website using the WIX platform. I chose it initially for its ratings with imagery/video, and I think it displays imagery better than some site hosts driven more towards retail sales and products. Here are some tips for breaking into your field: -Create a strong portfolio on instagram and post only your best pictures that highlight the industry/niche you want to get into. Use hashtags, or tags, to get the attention of those companies. (It will take time, months, years, but if you are persistent and driven to perfect the way you capture the nature/wildlife lifestyle you will get there) -Find connections, friends, and eventually mentors in the industry that can recommend you for jobs when the time comes. - Keep shooting. study it. STUDY the photos you love from other outdoor photographers and break down WHY the image is good, and then how you can implement that into your own work. Best of luck to you John, Emily |
